FROM FARM FIELDS TO SPORTING DREAMS:
BREYTON PAULSE’S JOURNEY AND GIVING BACK
Breyton Paulse hails from the Koue Bokkeveld near Ceres – one of the coldest places in the Western Cape in winter yet South Africa’s warmest community in his eyes. Here he grew up on a farm called De Keur Estate (where his parents were employed) and attended Skurweberg Secondary School. This public combined school, operating as a no-fee institution, stands as a beacon of dedicated learning within the Western Cape community. It is also a sport-loving school which Breyton Paulse has been supporting for years. This year, two teams in particular were uplifted with a heart-warming official event and sponsorship. This was followed by full-on functional fun on the fields with younger learners – led by the rugby legend himself.
BREYTON PAULSE’S JOURNEY
Born into a rugby-loving family, where both his father and grandfather played the game, this speedster quickly made a name for himself. Known for his uncanny ability to find the try line, he stood out in a sport dominated by larger athletes. While his signature flick-flack earned him fame, it was just one of many things that made him unforgettable on the field.
During his youth, Breyton Paulse excelled not only in rugby but also in cricket, soccer and athletics, representing Boland in the 200m and 400m sprints. Recognising his rugby potential, one of the owners of De Keur Estate, Charl du Toit, covered his tuition fees, allowing him to attend Stellenbosch University and further develop his talent. The estate has also supported children of other employees who sought to continue their education at university.
UPON RETIRING FROM INTERNATIONAL RUGBY, AFTER PLAYING FOR THE SPRINGBOKS FROM 1999 TO 2007, THIS PROLIFIC TRY-SCORER HAD AMASSED 64 TEST CAPS AND 10 TOUR MATCHES FOR THE SPRINGBOKS – SCORING 26 TRIES.
After hanging up his boots, Breyton Paulse embraced mountain biking, conquering the Cape Epic in 2009. He also completed the Untamed African MTB race in 2010 as a solo competitor when his partner, a local pro, had to withdraw. In 2019, he headed back to his Koue Bokkeveld roots with his race partner for the Momentum Health Tankwa Trek, a four-day stage race. It was a special event for him as he knows so many of the farmers and still stays in touch with all his schoolmates that stay there. That same year, he also competed in the Absa Cape Epic again, as well as in 2023 and this year.
GIVING BACK
Throughout his successful career, Breyton Paulse has been giving back. Beneficiaries include Skurweberg Secondary School as mentioned, where members of the first rugby and netball teams recently gathered for a very special moment – along with their coaches, the school’s management team and Breyton Paulse.
The teams’ dedication and dreams were recognised with the gift of new rugby and netball kits sponsored by REVITAL SA. Breyton, a former head boy of the school and REVITAL SA ambassador, personally handed over the kits – making this a day these young athletes will cherish forever.
‘If you’re going to play rugby or netball, do it with a smile
on your face because you’ll be ambassadors of the school.
Play with passion and play with all your heart.’
– Breyton Paulse
A massive thank you to everyone who made this day and sponsorship possible.
